False Timing it Right Identifying the key minutes, hours and days U nderstanding the effects and influences of the environment on muskies is only one part of the complex puzzle that helps predict when fish are most active. The first and perhaps most important component to putting together the puzzle is a good under-standing of the species being pursued. Muskies are dominant predators in most of our northern lakes and rivers and will eat a wide variety of prey. Frequently, they target different prey at different times of the year. Although muskies are opportunistic predators, they will feed aggressively when hungry, when food is readily available and when conditions are right. However, when their stomachs are full or when conditions are all wrong they will totally ignore any food source, regardless of presentation. This is an inevitable truth of muskie fishing.
